Corn seeds will be planted on top of three mounds when oak leaves are as big as a mouse’s ear. Once corn reaches 10” in height (hopefully at the full moon on May 31, the most advantageous time to plant) we will plant bean seeds. Last year the rabbits repeatedly ate the corn sprouts despite all sorts of deterrents (human hair, cayenne pepper, etc.). With the fence in place and a marigold perimeter, we are hopeful that one corn planting will suffice this year.
Squash, including zucchini and pumpkins, will be planted thereafter to shade the soil and deter weeds. Sage and feverfew, both perennial herbs, have come back along the perimeter.
Produce will be donated to the Good Neighbors Food Pantry or sold at coffee hour to benefit the pantry. This year, Newman Church is participating in Holy Harvest, a program through the UCC RI Association that encourages congregations to take part in a project focused on creation care, community engagement, and feeding our neighbors.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch with Pam Sherrill at church or during Coffee and Conversation to donate fish or to sign up for various garden chores. Our schedule is weather-dependent, but we welcome anyone interested to be included in our text list. Thanks to all, especially the Pokanokets for guidance, the worms for their castings, and to you for your support!
