“There is nothing new under the sun.” —Ecclesiastes 1:9
This summer I’ve been bicycling our area with the “church on wheels” to connect with our community and neighbors in new ways, and to embody that we are a church committed to worship and service!
But I’ve also learned that Newman Church has been “the church on wheels” before! In 1993, to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the founding of Rehoboth and Newman Church, church members loaded church pews onto a large flatbed truck and celebrated 350 years of being a “church on the move” in the community:

This “church on wheels” from 1993 is a great reminder that a church comes alive through the actions of people at work in the world, putting the love and service of Jesus into practice.
The sign on the float in 1993 said “rooted in history, growing for the future.” It’s a good metaphor for today, too, as we grow toward the fifth century of Newman Church.
As we enter a new school year, and new program year at Newman Church, we’re excited for the beginning of church school on September 13th. And for the next seven weeks in worship we’ll celebrate a season of blessings! During the “Heart to Heart” in each service we’ll offer a collective blessing to something wonderful in our midst:
- August 30: Blessing of Students, Backpacks, and CWS School Supplies
- September 6: Blessing of the Three Sisters Garden
- September 13: Blessing of the Newman Church Choir Stoles
- September 20: Blessing of the New Members
- September 27: Blessing of the Southern New England Conference, UCC
- October 4: Blessing of the Animals (St. Francis Day)
- October 11: Blessing of Baptism: Raelynn DiNitto
