Scent hearts are one way that parents of tiny babies in the Women and Infants neonatal intensive care unit can contribute to their care. Members of the Needles and Hooks group recently delivered 50 packs with four flannel hearts in each to Mara Coyle, NICU pediatrician and member of our choir. She then inserts her poem with instructions to the parents:
These soft warm hearts are given to you with care
To place under your clothes for you to wear
Place the heart by your baby’s face while they rest
It will be like they are snuggling close to your chest
Your scent will allow your baby to learn
What links you together until your return.
Thanks to all who have donated flannel (2 yards of cotton flannel makes 16 packs), cut and sewed front and back, turned right side out, stitched closed (no stuffing), washed, ironed, and bagged 4 to a pack. To date this year 250 packs have been delivered.
