Hello friends,
I’ve been leafing through old hymnals.
Newman Church has two hymnals: the Pilgrim Hymnal (1931) and the New Century Hymnal (1995). In worship we sing from both hymnals — songs that are old, songs that are new, and sometimes old songs that have been made new. Christianity has always been shaped, and reshaped, by its hymns.
Our Newman hymnals do something else great, too. Inside the front cover of each hymnal is a dedication or memorial; each hymnal is given in honor or in memory of someone. Even if you don’t recognize the name of the person being honored or remembered, it is wonderful to think about a small act of kindness, generosity, and remembrance from the past that is still helping us sing today.
This coming Sunday, take a look at the front cover of your pew hymnal and enjoy a gift of kindness from the past. We’ll be blessed in worship to sing three beautiful hymns together, and to hear the sermon message delivered by the Reverend Venson Jordan, drawing wisdom from scripture on things old and new.
As in our hymnals — sometimes it’s good to sing a new hymn; sometimes it’s good to sing an old hymn; but it’s always good to sing!
Traveling together,
Sam
