Newman Church invites you to celebrate Holy Week with us as we remember and celebrate the foundational stories of our faith. Through the following five worship services we will seek to make the core stories of our faith come alive in our own time!
April 13: Palm Sunday Service
10:00 a.m. Sunday in the Sanctuary
This service will tell the story of Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. The people throw their cloaks and palm branches into the road to make a way for Jesus, riding on a donkey into their lives. Read more about this story in Sunday’s sermon.
April 17: Maundy Thursday Service
7:00 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Hall
This is a dinner liturgy. The tables are set in Memorial Hall. We’ll share a meal of soup, salad, and bread. As we eat, there will be scripture readings, prayers, and music to help us remember the rituals of Jesus’s Last Supper. All are welcome; no RSVP is required. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., the service will begin at 7:00 p.m. See the service program here.
April 18: Good Friday Service
7:00 p.m. at Church of the Epiphany (map)
We are grateful to be able to join our neighbors at Church of the Epiphany Episcopal Church for Tenebrae, a service of readings and music as well at light and shadows at the foot of the cross. This service will pick up where we left off on Maundy Thursday in the Garden of Gethsemane. The church’s sanctuary is accessible via elevator, which can be reached from a ramp on the Newman Church side of St. Michael’s Court. Read more about Church of the Epiphany here.
April 19: Holy Saturday Easter Vigil
7:00 p.m. Saturday in Newman Church Front Yard
This is an outdoor service. We will gather around the light of a fire pit in front of the church, and welcome the resurrection light of Easter! The firelight symbolizes the victory of light and life over darkness and death. From the new fire we will all light our own beeswax candles, which represents the growing light of God’s love and discipleship at Easter. This will be a brief service of readings and prayers. The fire pit will be located near the parking lot; chairs will be provided for sitting. The congregation will be able to stay on sidewalk surfaces, so special footwear is not needed.
April 20: Easter Celebration Service
10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary
The culmination of Holy Week. This is a worship celebration of Jesus’s resurrection, marked by special scripture readings, music, and a focus on hope and new life. We look forward to worshiping together at the service!
